  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 5 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups kale
  • 2 cups tortellini
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • 1 pinch cayenne (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, cook crumbled sausage and diced onions over medium-high heat until onions soften. Drain excess grease and add minced garlic for one minute.
  2. Stir in flour for 1-2 minutes to eliminate raw taste.
  3. Mix in seasonings, then add chicken broth while scraping bits from the bottom of the pot.
  4. Gradually stir in heavy cream and bring to a boil before reducing heat to simmer.
  5. Add chopped kale and tortellini; simmer for 3-5 minutes until cooked through.
  6. Season with salt to taste before serving.
